Velo Vosges Challenge 2008

2 October 2008

cartervelovosgesIn January '08, Hilary Carter sadly developed a brain tumour leaving her locked in her own body, unable to communicate, so on 2nd October Chris, Thomas and Jonathan Carter, Hilary’s sons, will be participating in the Velo Vosges Challenge 2008 for three charities close to their hearts, of which brainstrust is one.

They have formed two teams of four with Simon, Ben & Tamsyn Derrick, Will Goodison and Eleanor Wratten; and will be cycling in relays covering 500 miles in 3 days from the North of France to Alsace in the East, near the border of Germany, going over the Vosges Mountains.

Le parcours

The route will be on minor roads and on the first day will take cyclists through some of the First World War battle fields of France including parts of the River Somme to the Champagne vineyards of the magnificent Montagne de Reims and Epernay for an overnight stop.

Day 2 will again start with a ride through the Champagne vineyards and then across the flat Chalons plain to the delightful Lorraine region of France, finishing on the outskirts of Nancy.

Day 3 will see riders ascend the Vosges Mountains with spectacular scenery along winding roads, climbing through pine forests close to ski resorts.  The countryside changes dramatically as teams descend to the Rhine valley with Hansel and Gretel like fairytale villages set amongst the Alsace vineyards to the beautiful village of Riquewihr for the finish and final celebrations.

Thomas says:

We have got the gear (including the Lycras!) and training is well under way for what is going to be a huge challenge for us all. With your help we can meet our fundraising target of £2000 and help make our challenge worthwhile. Donations can be made in person or online now at www.justgiving.com/cartercycle
Many thanks for your support.

Chris, Thomas, Jonathan

Thomas Stanford is rocking the Swanage Classic Triathlon

10 August 2008

Thomas Stanford and Moose ManThomas Stanford (pictured left of Moose Man) has courageously been convinced to take part in the Swanage Classic Triathlon for brainstrust. Little did he know that it would involve at lot more than he bargained for...!

His trusty friend James got Thomas to sign up for a 750m swim, 5k run and 20k bike triathlon before explaining that it would involve the icy cold waters off the South Coast, that he wouldn't see a racing bike before the day itself and that it starts at 6.30am!

Nevertheless, Thomas is keen not to let these factors ruin his weekend. So please sponsor his Triathlon by visiting his Justgiving page:

Anna's Summer Serenade
Midsummer Medley Chorus
19 July 2008

Anna Wormleighton and her talented musical friends are gathering again in her garden to bring the people of Knebworth a Summer Serenade.

Last year Anna orchestrated a wonderful Midsummer Medley that took us all by surprise! She invited a 15 strong group of talented musical friends to sing and play their instruments at the concert. The programme included choral arrangements and solo performances. Anna also showed her own musical roots with a virtuoso performance of Monti's Czardas on her violin. The evening was excellent and easily one the best summer evenings of the year.

Midsummer Medley Audience

This year's event promises to be even better and aims to beat last year's incredible £2,300 raised for brainstrust. A big thank you in advance to Anna and her mum for making this wonderful occasion an annual event!

This year, the Knebworth Twinning Association are kindly sponsoring the event and providing the publicity.

Tickets are £4

To buy your tickets for this wonderful musical evening please send a cheque made payable to Knebworth Twinning Association and a stamped addressed envelope to: Summer Serenade Box Office, Norlands, 23 Deards End Lane, Knebworth, Herts, SG3 6NL.

Chris and four friends are reaching for the three peaks!

Five are feeling PeakyChris Bethell, Charlotte's cousin, has set himself and four friends the task of The Three Peaks Challenge to raise funds for Charlotte's Fund of Hope.

The National Three Peaks walk involves climbing the highest mountains in England (Scafell Pike), Scotland (Ben Nevis) and Wales (Snowden). Chris, Ben Pearce, Marc Turner, Mike Dibden and Richard Buck will try to do all 3 within the space of 24 hours - hence The Three Peaks Challenge.

Charlottes Fund of HopeChris says: 'We are doing the challenge in memory of an amazing girl who touched many people's hearts. I could say so much about Charlotte but words just don't express how we all feel. We are raising funds to help people in similar circumstances.'
