brainstrust Supports the RCN in Their Call for Investment in Specialist Nurses
"The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) today joined forces with almost 40 of the UK’s leading health organisations, brainstrust included, to warn that cutting specialist nurse services for people with long term conditions would be a “false economy”, as they began a campaign for guaranteed access to specialist nursing care for all patients with long term conditions." - Royal College of Nursing
Now we see Specialist nurses as being a vital part of a brain cancer patient's journey. They help people manage their medication, offer advice and information about living with a brain tumour and they give emotional support to both the patient and their carer. They also offer the local health organisation opportunities to innovate how care is delivered. No mean feat!
Implications on 'economy' aside, brainstrust is supporting this campaign as we fully recognise the importance of specialist nurses and the support that they offer patients and carers in their battle against brain cancer. Without the expert support of Specialist Nurses, the patients that we meet everyday would be placed at an even greater disadvantage in their fight against this devastating disease.
So with that in mind, we were delighted to put our name to this letter, which appears in today's Daily Telegraph"SIR – After the general election, it is inevitable that the public sector will be forced to find efficiencies to a level and depth not seen for some time.
However, to cut specialist nursing care would not only be disastrous for patient care, but counter-productive in the quest to trim budgets and reduce spending. Not only do specialist nurses provide exceptional long-term care; they act as a long-term investment.
As an increasing number of people are diagnosed with long-term conditions, these experts will become even more invaluable to the health of the nation. Not only do these nurses change lives, they save money. Patients cared for by specialist nurses have lower readmission rates, fewer complications and shorter post-operative hospital stay times.
As health-care organisations that represent millions of patients and thousands of specialist nurses in Britain, we hope that the value and importance of these health-care experts will be recognised by political parties, ahead of the general election.
