| "Research hopes rise on brain tumour lab drive" |
| 07 March 2008 |
THE NEWSPLANS for the UK's first dedicated laboratory-based brain tumour research centre are a step closer. The University of Portsmouth is joining forces with the charity brainstrust to create a centre of excellence for brain tumour research on the south coast. Plans are in their early stages, but the centre will focus on dedicated laboratory-based brain tumour research. According to the University's professor of cellular and molecular neuro-oncology Geoff Pilkington, brain tumours are the most lethal and devastating tumours. They are the most common cause of death in children after accidents and the most common form of cancer in people under 40. Professor Pilkington said: "The aim of the collaboration between brainstrust and Portsmouth university is to fund staff in neuro-oncology to further our research and raise funds to buy equipment and provide running costs." |
